Three examples of charities benefiting from social media

You may be wondering how your organisation can make the best use of social media. If that’s the case, then some examples of how other people are using it might help, so here are three examples from today’s feeds:

1. Breast Cancer Awareness
BCA have teamed up with Estee Lauder to launch a Facebook app and YouTube and blogs in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The app allows users to post a message of support to people experiencing breast cancer, and see how these messages light up a map of the world.

It doesn’t sound the most interactive way to support cancer sufferers, but BCA seem to be going for increased awareness of the illness.

2. Center for Cancer Prevention
Here’s another example from the world of cancer awareness and research: the Center for Cancer Prevention and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston (USA, not Lincolnshire) have used Facebook Causes to raise funds from a staggering 6 million strong community. The money raised is being channelled into short-term projects which aim to improve cancer prevention and detection.

3. Covenant House
New York-based charity, Covenant House, that offers help to children and young people who have become homeless, has been declared the winner of the Aviva’s ‘Status for Youth’ charity contest. The contest asked people to donate their status updates to one of a selection of charities.

Covenant House receive $60,000 in return for the status updates that were donated to it.
